Dawson Sutton finished 19th in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Black’s Tire 200 at Rockingham Speedway.
After qualifying 19th, Sutton had his work cut out for him in a field where it was difficult to pass, especially deeper in the pack. Though passing was at a premium, the rookie was overall pleased with his truck and ended stage one in 20th.
A speeding penalty under the stage one caution put Sutton at the rear of the field for the restart and he worked his way through a caution-free stage two to 19th. Once again, though, he was happy with the No. 26 Rackley Roofing / W.A.R. Shocks Chevrolet and required no adjustments under the yellow.
Stage three brought with it a flat tire that led to an unscheduled pit stop and a two lap deficit to the leaders. Meanwhile, the field was slowed by a pair of red flags during the stage for debris cleanup for a total of 13 minutes, seven seconds. By the time the checkered flag flew, Sutton finished 19th, four laps down.
Points Update: Sutton remains 19th in the championship standings, just eight points behind fellow rookie Connor Mosack in 18th and one ahead of Matt Mills in 20th. Though he’s 189 points behind leader Corey Heim, Sutton is just 62 back from Stewart Friesen who currently holds the 10th and final playoff spot.
Rookie Standings: Sutton lost a spot in the rookie standings at Rockingham. Giovanni Ruggiero continues to lead the way, followed by Andres Perez De Lara and Connor Mosack. Sutton finds himself just eight points behind Mosack , though he has a 30 point advantage of Toni Breidinger and 25 over Frankie Muniz.
Season Stats: 7 starts, best finish 16th (Martinsville)
Inside the helmet with Dawson Sutton
“Overall, a good day. We were running in the top 10 in stage two and, unfortunately, cut a tire. Sometimes you just have those days. We didn’t qualify very well, but we were making moves and passes to get up there. It was a big learning experience for me for Texas in a few weeks. I’m looking forward to more of the mile-and-a-half tracks coming up. It’s going to be fun. Just gotta keep digging.”
